Letting more than 1.3 million players experience their Olympic dream inside Minecraft.
How to engage and connect young people with judo.
After the success of Mystery of the Kodokan and Mystery of the Budokan, the IJF wanted to take the next step. Not just teaching judo history or values in Minecraft, but translating the Olympic journey into real gameplay.
Olympic exposure peaks every four years, but Gen Z and younger millennials live inside games year-round. The opportunity was clear: use Minecraft not as a promotional channel, but as a cultural space where players could experience the road to the Olympic Games themselves.
With the Olympic Games returning to Paris in 2025, the International Judo Federation continued her successful initiatives, launching The Journey to the Great Shiai.
We created Journey to the Great Shiai: a Minecraft world that turns the road to the Olympic judo competition into an interactive adventure.
Instead of telling players what the Olympic Games stand for, we let them live it. Players embark on a journey from a mysterious island to Paris, mirroring the path of a judoka working towards the Olympic stage. Along the way, they encounter eight judo masters, each representing one of judo’s core values.
Progress isn’t about speed or brute force. It’s earned through challenges that test discipline, respect, courage, self-control and perseverance, the same values required to reach the Olympics.
To push Minecraft beyond its conventional limits, we introduced a fully custom card-battle system developed exclusively for this world. Players collected judo technique cards inspired by iconic Olympic throws such as O-uchi-gari and Uchi-mata, and deployed them in arena battles where their avatar performs the techniques on the mat.
Journey to the Great Shiai was built as the next chapter in the IJF’s Minecraft trilogy, raising both creative and technical ambition.
The world guides players across multiple environments, gradually introducing judo values through gameplay mechanics rather than tutorials. The custom card system adds strategic depth and replayability, while bespoke animations bring authentic judo techniques to life inside Minecraft.
The journey culminates in a life-sized recreation of Paris, where players arrive at the in-game adaption of the Champ de Mars Arena, where they put everything they’ve learned into practice on the mat.
Journey to the Great Shiai reached a global audience during the Olympic moment, proving Minecraft’s ability to function as a large-scale cultural touchpoint for sport.
As of January ‘26, the world has been downloaded more than 1.3 million times, and continues to introduce judo and its Olympic values to new players worldwide.
By translating the spirit of the Olympic Games into interactive play, the International Judo Federation connected with a new generation not through broadcasting, but through participation.
